BATH — Bath area natives with ties to the sister city program with Tsugaru, Japan, searched for news about friends and host families in the island nation after hearing about today’s massive earthquake there.

Sister-city coordinator reinforces long-standing ties between Bath, Japan

BATH — When Cindy Matthews first happened upon the Bath-Tsugaru Sister City program, the native Mainer was thousands of miles from her home state, in Japan.

“I actually was an assistant English teacher in the village of Shariki from 1992 to 1995,” Matthews recalled. “I got there in the summer of 1992, and I met up with the swim team from the Bath YMCA, who was there to participate in the Cheseborough Cup swim race.
